Obituary & Tributes
Felicia "Sally" M. Cates
Birth date: October 12, 1927
Death date: February 28, 2012
Felicia "Sally" M. Cates, 84, of Wichita, Kansas, went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, February 28, 2012. She was surrounded by her loving family.
Sally was born the daughter of Jake and Nell Salamone on Wednesday, October 12, 1927 in St. Louis, Missouri. As a young girl, her family moved to Wichita in 1934. She attended Blessed Sacrament through 8th grade and graduated from Cathedral High in 1945 as one of the "7 sisters." Sally continued her education at Mount St. Scholastica and WSU.
She later met a returning serviceman, Louis W. Cates, and on August 27, 1949, the two were united in marriage in Wichita, Kansas. With Sally's love and support, Lou became a successful attorney and judge. They enjoyed a happy marriage with lots of travel, fishing and golf.
Sally was a longtime member of Magdalene Parish, Crestview Country Club and various charitable organizations. She maintained many close relationships and her kids often joke that no matter where you went, she knew everybody.
After losing the love of her life, Louis, in 1992, she filled her time with charities and spreading abundant love to her friends and family. As she aged, golf became more work than fun; but, she developed a knack for Bingo. Her family will miss her beaming smile and her laugh with a wrinkled nose.
Survivors include her children, Michael Cates of Wichita, Kansas, Tim Cates and his wife Connie of Topeka, Kansas, Steve Cates and his wife Tammy of Lawrence, Kansas, Christie Thornton and her husband Steve of Wichita, Kansas; grandchildren, Zach Cates, Josh Cates, Patrick Hilburn, Cassandra Richardson, Levi Cates, Quincy Howell, Breck Howell, Gavin Thornton, Blake Thornton, Lukas Thornton and great-granddaughter, Aurora Dinneen.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 2, 2012 and will be immediately followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. in St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Wichita, Kansas.
A private interment will be held at the Calvary Cemetery, Wichita, Kansas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established in her loving memory with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 313 South Market, Wichita, Kansas 67202. Contributions can be mailed or left with the funeral home.
